The Digital Dialect: Exploring Technological Communication Trends and Fostering Workplace Inclusivity

“The Evolution of Workplace Diversity Through Technology and Communication”

Diversity in the workplace extends beyond demographic differences; it includes the unique ways our experiences with technology shape behaviors that influence workplace dynamics. Think back to your teenage years: when you called a friend, did you leave a message, jump straight into conversation, or avoid calls altogether in favor of texting?

In the era of corded phones fixed to walls, answering a call often required shared etiquette. The nearest person picked up, anticipating the caller would ask for a specific household member. This created moments of pause—considering whether it was too early or late to call or worrying about an awkward conversation with a sibling. Such behaviors defined the way we interacted with technology and others.

The introduction of caller ID, credited to Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson, revolutionized our phone habits. No longer compelled to answer every call, we began screening numbers and prioritizing responses. Combined with voicemail, phone calls became more functional and less urgent, reflecting a cultural shift in communication.

Eventually, text messaging overtook voice calls as the preferred method of communication. By 2023, an estimated 23 billion text messages were sent daily compared to 13.5 billion phone calls. Messaging apps with features like discretion, privacy, and immediacy brought about new behaviors and subcultures. Emojis, GIFs, and shorthand enriched these exchanges, transforming messaging into a creative, cultural phenomenon unlike any previous form of communication.

These technological shifts highlight the broader concept of diversity, offering a relatable lens for understanding its value in the workplace. At Valtree Corporation, we integrate these insights into our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) initiatives, fostering an environment that celebrates individual experiences. By examining how technology shapes behavior, we deepen our understanding of each person’s journey, creating a more inclusive and innovative workplace culture.

From recruiting to organizational culture and client collaboration, understanding the impact of technology-driven behaviors enhances our ability to adapt and thrive. DE&I programming can embrace these lighter, relatable topics to build connections and promote understanding. While TikTok trends may feel out of reach for some, shared insights into evolving communication norms—complete with emojis—create stronger, more efficient, and inclusive workplaces.
