Our client’s employees were experiencing confusion, frustration, and a sense of being overwhelmed due to the poor data quality and inconsistency within their organization. Business and operations teams could not rely on critical data for accurate or timely decision-making. They also struggled with limited documentation, inadequate discovery tools, and the challenge of interpreting inconsistently defined data rules and definitions, all while trying to locate data without a trustworthy source of truth.
Alongside these data quality issues, our client faced major obstacles in governing their data assets. The lack of clearly defined roles, responsibilities, and guidance meant that data governance tasks were carried out with little direction or accountability. Moreover, without established or published metrics to evaluate success, teams could not assess whether their data governance efforts were effective, nor if they aligned with the processes of other departments. As a result, monitoring, managing, and resolving data quality issues occurred in an ad-hoc manner, with no consistency in the processes, communication, or execution.
Following several unsuccessful attempts to implement data governance across the organization, our client partnered with Valtree Corporation to develop a comprehensive, sustainable, and long-term data strategy.

Our solution
A Valtree Data Strategy & Intelligence team developed a comprehensive solution to enhance the overall maturity of this client’s enterprise data governance by advancing its data cataloging and data quality capabilities. Initially, we collaborated with the client to understand the challenges they had encountered during previous attempts to implement data governance and quality measures. We then assessed the client’s current data catalog approach and governance model to identify what had worked well and what required change.
We adopted a three-pronged solution approach based on our findings:
- Enterprise Data Catalog: We developed an operating model, strategy, and roadmap to implement a robust enterprise data catalog for the organization. This catalog helped the client foster data literacy, align on common data definitions, ensure transparency through data lineage, and boost user trust in the data.
- Data Quality Center of Excellence (CoE): In tandem with the data catalog, we designed and implemented a Data Quality Center of Excellence (CoE), centralizing the client’s ability to identify, manage, and resolve data quality issues consistently. A detailed data quality roadmap was created, including a talent strategy to ensure the client could follow through on the initiative.
- Governance Operating Model: Finally, the Valtree team worked with the client to define a high-level governance operating model, clarifying roles, responsibilities, and associated process flows to support the model.
True to our approach with all data governance implementations, we continuously engaged throughout the initiative to promote the principles of data governance, educating key stakeholders on the business value of reliable data.
Results
Valtree Corporation developed and successfully implemented an enterprise strategy aimed at achieving the organization’s desired data governance maturity across governance, quality, and data cataloging. This involved creating a comprehensive roadmap, defining roles and responsibilities, crafting a 90-day implementation plan, and establishing key performance indicators (KPIs) to set a baseline and ensure the long-term success of the program.
Additionally, we designed and executed a flexible, iterative governance framework that ensures all data meets the business’s quality expectations—both now and in the future. This solution laid the groundwork for a sustainable, long-term data governance program, supported by well-informed business leaders who understand and appreciate its value.
